D&D Travel presents a collection of 32 images from our November, 2009 Getaway to Killarney and Ireland's Southwest Coast...We hope you enjoy! -Donna and Dennis [HOME] Note: large files - please allow ample time to load! |
The Blue Door Restaurant in Adare - voted "Tidiest Village" in Ireland many times...Note the fast-disappearing thatched roof - now becoming a rarity in the country... |
The Augustinian Friary in Adare, AKA The Black Abbey, founded in 1316 by the Earl of Kildare |
Stained-glass beauty inside St. Mary's Church of Ireland, Killarney, built in 1870 |
One of 13 glorious rainbows we witnessed during our stay in the Emerald Isle...This one just outside the hotel in Killarney town, at the entrance to Killarney National Park |
Above and below: Low tide creates fascinating reflections of sunlight-on-water on a beach along the Dingle Peninsula in Southwest Ireland... |
|
An escapee!! Sheep form a significant portion of the population in this part of the country! |
Another gorgeous vista along the Dingle Peninsula... |
Colorful shops along the waterfront in Dingle Town |
The sign says it all! The Pub is below (and opposite the church - really!!) |
|
Another view of Dingle Town after a brief autumn rain shower |
Dingle is home to a large fishing fleet - these boats docked in Dingle Bay... |
The Owengarriff River as it tumbles toward Muckross Lake...Dense, green foliage is everywhere, creating the feeling of being in a Medievil forest...It really IS this green!!! |
Torc Waterfall - especially spectacular after an Irish rain - as the Owengarriff flows along...The falls are just outside Killarney Town. |
More spectacular greenery along the pathway to Torc Falls... |
A pile of peat - or "turf" - against a stone "famine" home in the Kerry Bog Village, between Killorglin and Glenbeigh in County Kerry. Peat is still cut from area Bogs, allowed to dry in blocks and then used as fuel to heat and cook in rural Ireland... |
Above and below: Two inhabitants of the Bog Village - both very friendly! |
|
Spectacular scenery in the countryside along the Ring of Kerry... |
A view of the Atlantic along the Ring of Kerry. Rain is falling from some angry clouds far out over the ocean as the sun makes a brief appearance. Rainbows are usually close at hand! |
Another lovely scene along the Ring drive... |
Glancing across the town green in the very colorful Village of Sneem |
"Ladies View" - A scenic overlook high above the Lakes of Killarney |
A local duo performs at Murphy's Pub in downtown Killarney |
Our damp bicycle entourage, just arriving at Muckross House in Killarney National Park. Led by famed Driver/Guide John O'Neill (4th from left), he deftly guided us along the parks pathways, narrowly averting disaster along a flooded portion...With the ride cut a bit short, we retreated to an excellent (and dry) meal at the cafe on site - with some of the best soup in Ireland! |
Muckross House in Killarney National Park - built in 1839 and visited by Queen Victoria in 1861 - offers extensive gardens, among them the Rock, Stream and Sunken gardens - and lovely grounds to explore alongside Muckross Lake... |
Vines creep up the side of the house, along with the ever-present moss! |
A lovely November bloom after an "Irish Mist" in the gardens at Muckross... |
Delicious crepes being made at the Cobh Heritage Center in Cobh, County Cork. Cobh was the emmigration point for millions of Irish, especially during the Great Potato Famine in the 1840s. It was also the last port-of-call for the ill-fated Titanic prior to its striking an iceberg in 1912... |
The flagship store of Blarney Woolen Mills in Blarney, County Cork. Perhaps best known for Blarney Castle and the famous Blarney Stone (kissing it is said to bestow the gift of eloquence), the store is probably the best place to shop for all things Irish - and then some! |
World-famous Driver-Guide, Mr. John O'Neill |
Finally, some of the fine, colorful Irish-made woolen products the country is so famous for... |
