D&D Travel's New England Photo Series...

The Great North Woods of

 Northern New Hampshire!

* * * * * * * * * *

The following 33 images were photographed the weekend of October 5th, 2013 in the north woods area surrounding Colebrook, NH, north to Pittsburg and south to Berlin. Though historically the peak up here is usually past that date, we were delighted to find much color still ablaze. While far from the beaten path, this area of New Hampshire is well worth a visit for an autumn vacation...or at any other time of year!

The good folks at the Northern Comfort Motel in Colebrook, NH will make your stay a great one! In fact, here is the view from our room:

Above: The golden sunlight of early morning along NH Route 145, heading north toward Pittsburg

Above & below: Diamond Pond, just north of Coleman State Park, near Dixville Notch...

The sun's disk just appears through the clouds, as a reflection in the clear waters of the pond

Above and below: More color along NH Route 145, north of Colebrook...

Along the path to Dixville Flume. At the lower set of falls in Dixville Notch State Park, on Route 26 east of Colebrook, the water level was a bit low, so we continued on to the upper cascades:

Above and below: Huntington Cascades - the spectacular upper set of falls in Dixville Notch State Park...The trail to this point is a bit more rugged a climb, but so well worth it!

The Balsams - a resort in Dixville Notch - currently under renovation. The scene here is very much like Ireland's Kylemore Abbey!! It is located along NH Route 26...The resort, built in 1866, plans to reopen in late 2014...

Several miles north of Colebrook, along NH Route 145, you'll find Beaver Brook Falls Scenic Area - an easily-accessible gem ...and absolutely breathtaking waterfall. Above is the setting as you approach the short path (seen on the right) to the base of the falls...

The horsetail falls has several sections, with an 80-foot total drop. The lower section, seen below, is just as easy to get to via a wooden bridge over Beaver Brook!

Here is a view of the entire falls!

Above two images: still more lovely scenery along Rt. 145...

We re-visit the 45th parallel, along Route 145...still there after 40 years!

Such natural beauty - this fence surrounds a local cemetery...

This is actually the Connecticut River, fed by Lake Francis to the north, as it roars under the Route 145 bridge (Mill Street) entering Pittsburg. The First, Second and Third Connecticut Lakes, along with Lake Francis, all feed the river, beginning along Route 3 at the Canadian border. That border is only 23 miles north of Pittsburg, NH...

The Connecticut River, as it cascades turbulently just a few feet upstream from the covered bridge below...

...and then flows under the Pittsburg-Clarksville Covered Bridge on Bacon Road, just south of the center of town...The bridge is circa 1876 and is 89 feet long. It is now closed to  vehicular traffic...

A view of Lake Francis...the last lake in the chain that feeds the Connecticut River...

Above and next 2 images below: Along NH Route 16 near Milan, heading south toward Berlin...

The Stark Covered Bridge in Groveton, NH...Built in 1862, at just under 140 feet in length, spanning the Upper Ammonoosuc River...It is no longer carrying vehicle traffic.

Above and next 2 below: More lovely autumn colors along Route 16 between Milan and Berlin...

Above and below: The "Cascade Flats" section of Berlin, NH, along the Androscoggin River

Heading south along NH Route 115 - The Owl's Head Highway, between Meadows and Carroll. The 10-mile highway is prime "Moose-contact" roadway in this part of the north!

A gorgeous view looking northwest, atop The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, NH!

A colorful flower shop along Main Street in Colebrook...

Finally...The "Tracks to Nowhere" - a Birch grows between rails, beside the Little Grille at the Depot - a great restaurant in a converted old railway station on Route 302 in Littleton, NH...
